INSTRUCTION
SHEET FOR SOMMA DRILL SPEEDER DSPD
The
Somma Drill Speeder is a compact powerful tool designed to help
eliminate secondary operations, optimize drill speed, and perform
many milling or slotting operations. The Somma Drill Speeder will
fit in any 2” tool holder, is 17” long overall and requires only
8.5” of clearance behind the quill. The Somma Drill Speeder’s
drive motor is a mere 2.3” square. The Somma Drill Speeder can be
used on New Britain’s, Acme’s, and various single spindle
machines on the cross slide.
Electrical
Installation.
As
with any electrical device, always follow all applicable electrical
codes. Electrical connections should be handled by a qualified
electrician. The unit will run on 220-240 VAC, 3-phase, and
requires only 8 amps of current.
Mount
control panel in an area where it will not be in direct line with
splashing coolant, and flying chips. Create two knockout holes, one
for input power and one for machine interface wires. Open the front
door, and with a thin blade screwdriver insert the tip into the
bottom of the disconnect switch and remove it from the DIN rail.
Attach line voltage input wires to the disconnect then reinstall the
switch to the DIN rail. Attach a ground wire to the lug provided in
the upper left corner of the panel.
Two
wires are provided to interface with your machine to start and stop
the unit. These wires are capped with wire nuts and located in the
lower left inside of panel. Attach these wires to any dry contact
device. A closed circuit will start the speeder, an open will stop
it. For proper operation these wires must be attached. DO NOT UNDER
ANY CIRCUMSTANCES APPLY ANY VOLTAGE TO THESE WIRES; PERMANENT DAMAGE
TO THE DRIVE WILL RESULT. These wires should be kept separate from
the line voltage wires.
Operation.
Set
multi turn pot to “5”. Turn disconnect to the “on” position.
After a few seconds the display should change from letters to a
number. Close the contact on the interface wires, unit should start
to run at the speed indicated on the display. Turning the rheostat
from “5” to “10” will cause the speeder to run from slow to
fast in one direction. If opposite rotation is desired turn the
speed pot to a setting in between “5” and “0”. The speed is
infinitely variable, with “0” and “10” being max speed in
either direction and 5 being zero speed. Once the speed is set, use
the contact to start and stop the unit. It is recommended that when
powering up the unit leave the contact in the open position.
