All Somma/Balas collets for automatic screw machines are cam ground by a process Balas pioneered many years ago...see illustrations below. The tremendous success of cam grinding with a cloverleaf shape has resulted in this process being adopted by most manufacturers of collets...even the "cloverleaf" name is now generally accepted terminology.

Cloverleaf cam ground collets provide a means of handling stock size variation and collet wear that cannot be done with a round ground collet or one with flat ground reliefs at the saw slots.
