CUTTING-EDGE GAGE FOR CIRCULAR FORM TOOLS
TO SCRIBE TOOL FOR GRINDING:
1. Brush steel blue on edge where tool is to be gashed. It is best to do this on the larger diameter side of tool, however, the gage will mark irregular contours very satisfactorily also.
2. Determine direction of gash as to right or left hand operation, and set slotted cross- piece ring on the proper set of graduations. - for standard offset, cross-piece ring is set on 0 degree. If top-rake is required, set ring on degree rake desired, up to 15 degrees.
Lock ring in position by tightening both thumb screws on same.
3. Screw tool on to stud, with steel blue under cross-piece ring in position desired. - Insert blade into slot and scribe line on tool. - (Much tool life can be saved when resharpening tools by scribing this line as close to previous sharpening or damaged edge as possible.)
4. Remove tool from stud and grind to this line, either on surface grinder or by hand.
TO CHECK CUTTING EDGE BEFORE PUTTING TOOL ON MACHINE:
Set hairline lens in accordance with instruction (2) above. Screw tool on to stud and compare with hairline.
If, as is sometimes the case, the best cutting angle for a tool can be found only after experimenting, this angle, once determined, may be checked with the hairline lens and can be reproduced exactly on all successive sharpenings. (The degree of angle may be etched on tool for reference at any future time).
