RECESSING TOOLS

Diagram showing Stop Ring which clamps around spindle cap of No. 2 B&S Machine.  Must be used in conjunction with No. 2 Recess Tool.

  1. MOUNT RECESS TOOL IN THE TURRET OF THE SCREW MACHINE.

  2. SET TOOL FOR RIGHT OR LEFT HAND OPERATION BY LOOSENING CAM SCREW (2) AND ROTATING BODY (1) UNTIL CAM SCREW (2) AND ROTATING BODY (1) UNTIL CAM SCREW (2) IS IN THE CAM GROOVE IN FINE ADJUSTING SLEEVE (5) THAT MOVES THE BODY (1) IN THE DIRECTION DESIRED.  IT IS IMPORTANT IN ALL CASES THAT THE PRESSURE OF THE CUTTING ACTION IS DOWNWARD (NOT UPWARD) WHETHER THE SPINDLE IS RUNNING FORWARD OR BACKWARD.  THIS WILL PREVENT THE CUTTING TOOL FROM SPRINGING AND DIGGING INTO THE WORK.

  3. LOOSEN CLAMP SCREW (12) AND ROTATE HEAD OF TOOL SO THAT THE CUTTING TOOL (8) IS AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO I.D. OF HOLE TO BE RECESSED.  THEN TIGHTEN CLAMP SCREW (12).

  4. WITH CAM FOLLOWER AT THE START OF THE RECESSING LOBE ADJUST STOP ADJUSTING SCREW (3) AND CUTTING TOOL (8) LENGTHWISE SO THAT WHEN STOP ADJUSTING SCREW (3) CONTACTS THE SPINDLE CAP OF THE SCREW MACHINE (OR THE STOP RING ON THE #2 B&S MACHINE) THE CUTTING TOOL (8) WILL BE AT THE CORRECT DISTANCE INTO THE HOLE AT WHICH THE PART IS TO BE RECESSED.  TIGHTEN LOCK NUT (4).

  5. THE FORWARD MOTION OF THE TURRET WILL NOW MOVE THE CUTTING TOOL SIDEWAYS INTO THE WORK AT A 1:1 RATIO.  THE CORRECT DEPTH OF CUT (1/8 MAX) IS SET BY COUNTER ADJUSTMENT OF THE TWO SLEEVE ADJUSTING SCREWS (6).  THIS ADJUSTMENT CAN BE SEEN BY WATCHING THE ZERO LINE OF THE FINE ADJUSTING SLEEVE.  BE SURE THE CLAMP SCREW IS TIGHT BEFORE MAKING FINAL ADJUSTMENTS.

  6. THE TOOL CAN ALSO BE USED FOR O.D. GROOVING BY SETTING THE CUTTING TOOL CLOSE TO THE O.D. OF THE PART AND SETTING THE TOOL SO THAT IT MOVES TOWARDS CENTER.

  7. TO DISASSEMBLE THE ENTIRE TOOL REMOVE THE ASSEMBLING SCREW (11).  WHEN REASSEMBLING THE TOOL BE SURE THAT THIS SCREW IS TIGHT SO THAT THE STROKE OF THE TOOL IS NOT CHANGED.

  8. WHEN THE R&L RECESSING TOOL IS SET UP ON TURRET LATHES THE SHANK OF THE TOOL IS HELD IN THE TURRET, WHEN USED ON THE MULTI-SPINDLE AUTOMATICS THE TOOL IS HELD IN A HOLDER MADE FOR THE TOOL SLIDE.  ON BOTH MACHINES PROVISIONS WILL HAVE TO BE MADE ON THE CROSS SLIDE FOR MOUNTING A STOP AGAINST WHICH STOP ADJUSTING SCREW WILL STRIKE.  AS IN ABOVE DIAGRAM.
